There were rumors that Liverpool were interested in signing Matheus Cunha in January, and Atletico Madrid appears to be prepared to part ways with the Brazilian ace.
During the transfer window in January, the Reds were looking at players with attacking talent.
It is now common knowledge that Liverpool pounced on the opportunity to acquire Luis Diaz from Porto in a deal that could be worth as much as £49 million.
It would appear that Liverpool brought forward their plans to sign Diaz in order to prevent themselves from losing him to Tottenham Hotspur.
However, it does appear that Liverpool had other potential targets in mind, and one of those targets is now becoming available once more.
According to reports, Liverpool was interested in Matheus Cunha.
It was reported in the Spanish newspaper AS that the Reds made an offer for the forward Matheus Cunha who plays for Atletico Madrid.
There were rumors that Cunha was interested in moving to Anfield, but Diego Simeone decided to keep him with Atletico Madrid instead.
After some time has passed, Cunha almost certainly wishes he had moved to Liverpool rather than staying in this city.
Cunha has only started two games for Atletico Madrid so far this season, and he hasn’t found the back of the net in La Liga once during this miserable campaign.
Just a little over a year and a half have passed since Cunha was traded from Hertha Berlin to Atletico Madrid, but Marca reported earlier this month that he is now free to sign with any club he pleases.
It would appear that Liverpool now have another opportunity to sign Cunha, but the question is whether or not they should take advantage of this possibility.
Cunha is a very effective player in the press and it would appear that he would be a good fit for Jurgen Klopp’s style of play.
Cunha received his training at a Red Bull club called RB Leipzig, which is something that Liverpool appears to value. In addition, Cunha possesses a great deal of versatility, as he can play anywhere along the front line and even as a false nine, which is a position that Liverpool needs to consider considering in light of the uncertainty surrounding Roberto Firmino’s future.
The 23-year-old player still possesses a great deal of unrealized potential, and, to tell the truth, he appears to be a much better fit for Klopp’s playing style than he was for Simeone’s.
Although Cunha’s time with Atletico Madrid may not have piqued the interest of Liverpool supporters, it is clear that the club regarded him favorably enough to pursue him as a possible replacement for Diaz.
Cunha’s availability will almost certainly pique Liverpool’s interest once more at this point, and he might be just the kind of player that Klopp needs to get things back on track.
