The stretch of water that can be found between South America’s Cape Horn, Chile, and the South Shetland Islands in Antarctica is known for being one of the most treacherous stretches of sea in the entire world.

If you want to visit Antarctica, you have to travel through the Drake Passage, which is a stretch of water that is very large, turbulent, and rough, and it is over 600 miles long.

The waterway has become extremely popular on the social media platform TikTok, where users are uploading videos of themselves navigating the passage on cruise ships; the footage depicts a terrifying landscape.

Drake Passage goes viral on TikTok

After a TikTok user by the name of Natasha began documenting her journey to Antarctica on her profile titled “The World of Pursuit,” which has over 500,000 followers, there was a surge in interest regarding the Drake Passage.

“Welcome to day two of our journey to the Antarctica,” the narrator said. “Today is the day that we cross the Drake Passage,” she said in a clip that has amassed an incredible 11 million views as of this writing.

The terrifying video shows the woman filming from inside her cabin as she describes the enormous waves that are crashing over the deck and saying that the journey will take two and a half days.

She explains that depending on which side of the passage you take, you will either experience the “Drake Shake” or the “Drake Lake,” which respectively refer to turbulent seas and placid water.

She is seen undergoing the “Drake Shake” in the video, and she comments that everyone was clinging to the boat for “dear life” as they ate their breakfast.
