Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha, who has been linked with a transfer away from the La Liga giants for some time, is supposedly on the verge of signing with Wolves, who are apparently likely to beat the likes of Aston Villa and Leeds United to the signing of the player.
According to Cadena Ser, the Premier League club already has an agreement in place to recruit Cunha during the month of January’s transfer season. It would appear that Julen Lopetegui is already working hard behind the scenes to improve crucial aspects of his new squad via the winter market.
The absence of goals has been a major problem for Wolves this season. Raul Jimenez has not yet returned to the level he had before his injury, while Diego Costa, as expected, appears to be playing well below his capabilities. The fact that Sasa Kalajdzic is out for an extended period of time with an injury has not helped the Molineux team’s situation either.
Yet, if this report is to be believed, Lopetegui is already working his magic. Cunha is a player who has recently been linked to Aston Villa, as well as the likes of Manchester United and Leeds, according to Talk Sport. However, it is unlikely that Atletico will recoup much of the £42 million that the Spanish side spent on the forward.
Given how poorly Wolves have done in the Premier League so far this season, the signing of Cunha will undoubtedly come as a surprise to a lot of people. Especially considering that several of the top teams in the division, like Villa and Leeds, have been said to be interested in the 23-year-old attacker.
Cunha, who was once regarded as “exceptional,” has the potential to make a significant contribution to the Wolves if the deal is able to close in the coming days. Despite the fact that the forward has had a terrible season with Atletico Madrid over the past 18 months, Leeds and Unai Emery’s Villa will have the notion that they missed out on something fantastic by not signing him.
The news that the Wolves have signed Cunha will come as a shock to everyone.
In January, Lopetegui will have his hands full trying to rebuild Wolves’ squad while still attempting to keep crucial players like Ruben Neves and Pedro Neto on the team. This will be quite the challenge for Lopetegui. However, keeping such notable players on the roster while also bringing in players like Cunha will be a bold move on the part of the former Sevilla manager.
After all, the South American forward was previously considered to be one of the most desirable attackers across the entirety of Europe. And despite the fact that Cunha’s play has been uninspiring at best this season, the forward has the potential to reveal his true quality with a move to Wolves, much to the chagrin of Leeds and Villa. This is a development that is sure to upset both of those clubs.
